As I round the corner to my final steps getting the Heywood chairs complete, I have to take some time to reflect. Either myself or my mother was working on these for about 2 weeks. It was a lot of work but things went smooth, much thanks to Mom and her very talented sewing skills . Then I ask myself, knowing that these chairs are going to be at a high price point because of all the work involved, WHY RESTORE?
At first glance, these chairs looked to be in decent shape. As I was disassembling them, I found a mirad of issues including much more wear on the seat fabric which had worn through in many areas, sun fade as evidenced when inspecting the fabric after removed and dirt! I cannot believe how dirty they were! No cleaning would have saved them in fact, it would have disintegrated the fabric. Most things from this era have been used long and hard. They are still valuable, but not as much so in their unrestored state. Would you rather have something beat up looking or something crisp, bright and clean in your home? The craftsmanship on these vintage furnishings far surpasses any new furniture you could buy today and that in and of itself makes them worthy to pour all of this love in!
Why Joybird? I have had a box of swatches for a while (request them free on their website! JOYBIRD.com) and just loved the weaves and awesome bright colors. Price wise, they are better quality textiles and not the cheapest out there. I felt that investing more into the fabric will keep them looking their best for a long time. Plus, I was able to get a little discount on the cost applying for the trade discount they offer. The fabric was great to work with and I just ordered another color for my next project.
Color? I chose a vivid deep turquoise. Not only is that a great period color, it works well when you have a neutral decor. I accessorize with my furnishings and an awesome bold color like this will create a dramatic focal point in your room. One chair would be great, but a PAIR??!!!! These guys really do make a decorating dream team and that is one reason I am keeping them together. Plus I think finding a pair that lived their lives together is pretty special. I was at the home they lived in and left with 3 additional pieces of Heywood Wakefield casework which is in my office. The small home was filled with the best pieces. They were very loyal customers. I am sure they were sad to downsize and watch them move on. Need a swatch to decide? I have all the scraps and would gladly cut a piece and mail it out to you! Of course, if you have the JOYBIRD swatches already, you can just sift through! Vibe Aquatic is the one swatch I noticed does not show well on the computer. It looks flat and has no depth and I can assure you, it is much more beautiful in person. All of my pics thus far have been in poor inside lighting so I will be taking a serious in natural light to update the listing. My goal today is to finish getting the 2nd chair together, hit the hardware store to search for some screw plugs and I think a screw or 2 I am missing. Clean up the legs and lastly, attach a dust cover. If anyone local would like to see them complete, let me know and I will arrange to have them at the shop when you visit. I could knock a little off the price if not going through etsy and of course, you will save shipping!
I realize that these are not in a price point for everyone. Etsy will find me a buyer and I actually have been impressed with how quick my prior high end restorations have found homes. I would appreciate any referrals! If you have designer/decorator friends or someone currently searching to furnish a home, please send them my way! Even if they know nothing about this brand/era, I would gladly tell them exactly what they are considering and why it is a worthy investment! Because let's face it, many decorators are mixing eras these days! Surely these guys will pack a punch to make a space great!
Thanks so much for following along as I have been getting feedback from folks enjoying my process! We will probably dig in to the single chair fairly quickly as not to loose our mojo! Fabric has been ordered and should be here in about a week. Here is the listing. I will update photos shortly with both chairs. Please reach out if you want me to reserve them for you. I would love to have them ready to ship by this weekend, and with my hours cut at work, this is kind of my job now and I don't get paid until they get sold! 😜👍
